San Antonio, Texas– Over a thousand parents and children participated on Saturday, August 11, in the first ever D5 Fit Family 1 Mile Health Walk at Roosevelt Park, the final Big Event for the San Antonio Sports Fit Family Challenge.
The San Antonio Sports Fit Family Challenge, presented by Superior Health Plans, completed a successful third summer of getting families moving and eating healthier with over 100 FREE fitness events city-wide.
Along with the walk in the park, families enjoyed a community fair with free health screenings, dental check ups, and fitness activities such as rock walls, bungee trampolines, and Zumba workouts. District 5 Councilman David Medina, co-sponsor of the event, gave away 1,485 free backpacks and school supplies to children who participated in the one mile walk.
Armando Castro and his family attended the event, hoping to win the final $1,000 grand prize of the summer. Castro held the winning ticket.
“We joined the program back in July,” Castro said. “And even though we’ve only been at it for a little bit, we’ve all seen progress. We will definitely be back next year so we can be a part of the program all summer.”
Planning for the 2013 Fit Family Challenge is underway. Check back online at FitFamilyChallenge.com for details.
